Dealer Wars hero Fitz has new cause: Cut the estate tax
Automotive News | July 25, 2011 – 12:01 am EST
The Dealer Wars are mostly over, at least for the time being. Sure, there are still lawsuits pending in the aftermath of the dealership rejections by General Motors and Chrysler. And some Lincoln dealers — formerly Lincoln-Mercury dealers — are up in arms.
But the three warriors who led the triumphant Committee to Restore Dealer Rights — Tammy, Spitz and Fitz — are back to selling cars and trucks.
Tammy — Tamara Darvish of Darcars Automotive Group in Silver Spring, Md. — also is putting the finishing touches on her book about the great struggle.
Spitz — Alan Spitzer of Spitzer Auto Group in Elyria, Ohio — and his daughter Alison Spitzer wrote their own book,Grand Theft Auto, which is about the committee’s role in the politicking that almost miraculously got Congress to pass a bill giving the rejected dealers a right to arbitration. The Spitzer book already is on sale.
But Fitz — Jack Fitzgerald of Fitzgerald Auto Malls in Kensington, Md. — has moved on to another legislative struggle to benefit dealers, as well as farmers and other small-business owners.
While most of Washington has wrestled with raising the debt ceiling and debated whether the Bush tax cuts should be revoked, Fitzgerald has campaigned for a simple away to eliminate the death tax.
He has hooked up with a new outfit, Americans Standing for the Simplification of the Estate Tax, aka ASSET.
The group’s Web site — assettax.org — proposes replacing the estate tax with a capital gains tax. Under the plan, assets wouldn’t be taxed at death. Assets would pass to the heirs, and capital gains taxes would be paid only if and when a sale occurs.
Yes, Jack Fitzgerald is taking on another tough cause — and looking for support — just the way Jimmy Stewart did in the movie Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.
Some people just don’t know when to quit.
